FACT: Popularity Makes Children Choose Career In Entertainment World

These are factors why children aged between seven and 14, want to get into the world of entertainment, according to a survey by Adecco Malaysia, a leading human resource solutions company.

The survey interviewed respondents in the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Baru and Malacca in mid-November and December last year.

According to Universiti Putra Malaysia's Education Faculty Dean, Profesor Dr Ab Rahim Bakar, the desire to become a performing artiste was a "new thing" which was in tune with technological advancements and the development of the entertainment world.

Previously, it was not a popular career choice among children.

"When children in the yesteryear were asked what they wanted to become, the common answers were doctor, teacher, lawyer or join the army. Rarely, did we get anyone saying they wanted to become actors (in the entertainment world)," he told Bernama in a recent interview.
The research showed that the study of medicine which was the career of choice in 2012, was now in third place, behind educators. This was followed by careers in modelling, restaurant owner or chef.

According to Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim, television reality shows influenced children in the selection of careers.

"They see the glamour. Now, being a chef is a popular choice, with some being called celebrity chefs. Cooking shows have also become popular among audiences here," she noted.

"Compared to children in previous generations who knew they had to build careers through reading, this is a dying habit among children today.

"Parents and schools have to be creative. They could take the children to visit the National Science Centre or the Planetarium to give more exposure,” she said.

Actor Zed Zaidi, whose real name is Rozaidi Abd Jamil, said not only children but also teenagers viewed acting as a popular career when in reality, it was not as easy as they thought.

He said parents should not encourage their children to become actors as the performing arts industry in the country was still unstable.

They should instead, encourage them to obtain a diploma or degree before going into the performing arts, he added. -- BERNAMA
