Suspected political thugs on Wednesday invaded Oredo Local Government Council secretariat in Benin City, Edo State capital.
Daily Independent reports that, the thugs stormed the secretariat and stopped the councillors from impeaching the council chairman, Osaro Obaze.
It was gathered that the councilors had on Thursday impeached the
leader of the legislative arm, Monday Oboigba, his deputy, Esohe
Usiobaifo, and elected Nohayi Obaseki as the new leader.
The councilors, however, denied the allegation that they were
planning to impeach the council boss. They said majority of the
councilors, precisely eight out of twelve, passed a vote of no
confidence on the former leader because of his high handedness and
dictatorial tendencies in running the affairs of the legislative arm.
Responding, Obaze, while speaking with journalist posited that he
does not recognise any change in the leadership of the legislative arm,
and noted that Monday Oboigba remains the only leader he recognises.
“I am not aware of any problem that will warrant impeachment” Obaze said.
When asked about the political thugs loitering the secretariat, he said: “they
are party youths who heard that they want to impeach me so they came on
solidarity but I have asked them to go that there is no cause for alarm”.
It would be recalled that on Thursday 24, July, suspected political
thugs reportedly stormed Oredo Local Government Secretariat in Benin
City, the Edo State capital, and whisked away the mace, which is a symbol of authority.
However, the political terrain in Edo has been boiled up following the happenings in the State House of Assembly over the failed attempt to remove Governor Adams Oshiomhole. It would be recalled that on June
23, 2014, members of the House reportedly resorted to physical fight in
a bid to enforce the suspension of their colleagues. On July 2, 2014, the Deputy Speaker of the State House, Festus Ebea, who was previously suspended, was impeached for alleged misconduct and misdemeanour.
